Generally they should not provide healthcare. There needs to be a mechanism to support the poor and provide basic medical needs, but the government does not have responsibility to provide health care. The government is also notoriously inefficient in many things. Besides, our entire system would then be susceptible to political influence in a way we've never seen before, not to mention the corruption that exists in government more than the private sector.

What government should do is provide for a stable society that supports free market principles so that citizens can operate their own health care insurance companies and health care providers and compete with one another. This would mean the government needs to address the regulations is places on the current system.

first of all, isn't every doctor obliged to give care to people in immediate need of help? I thought it was in their oath. Second, I have read at least a couple of times, in the Mediterranean country where I am now living, of people who collapsed and died in front of a hospital. In this country, doctors/nurses are required to stay in the hospital, they can't go out - even if just 5 meters/yards! The correct procedure is to call an ambulance, which will come from who knows where and take you to the hospital when it's too late
